Lark Rise to Candleford - My One Weakness

If you've been around here for a while, you know how I love my Downton Abbey.  (You can read about that here and here because I know you're just dying to.)  Oh, and don't worry, I got both seasons for my birthday back in March.  You were worried, weren't you?

But, if you're a fan of DA, you might have become crushingly aware, like we did, that season number three doesn't start until January.

The question of our survival did indeed come up, but thankfully, we were saved.  I heard through the grapevine about another BBC costume drama set in the late 19th century in Victorian England.

They had me at BBC costume drama.

That's how we learned about Lark Rise to Candleford.  It's the semi-biographical story of a young girl from a small, poor hamlet who goes to live in the post office in a market town eight miles away.  (You can check it out on Amazon here.)

So all this while that I haven't been living in Downton Abbey hoping for a butler and lady's maid to just appear on my doorstep, we've been falling in love with LR to C.  (Don't worry, DA and LR to C don't know about each other, so we're safe.)

It's a completely different story line and very family friendly.  The setting looks like you've stepped into an oil painting that just takes your breath away.  It's much lighter than DA and not nearly as intense.  Plus remember Mr. Bates, the valet from DA?  He's the Pa in LR to C.  And Laura's Ma is Claudie Blakely who played Charlotte on Pride and Prejudice.  If you love a good BBC drama, you'll see so many actors that you know.  It's like a family reunion!

*The only thing that I didn't care for was the Christmas episode in Season 2, which was a ghost story.  As a person who detests ghost stories (I will seriously cry, plug my ears and slam my eyes shut), this was one we just skipped because I was convinced I wouldn't be able to go to sleep that night.*

So if you're looking for something to ease the craving of a true English accent and a steaming cuppa served with a scone until January, this will do the trick.

In the meantime, guess what's going on my Amazon wishlist?

Lark Rise to Candleford, you are my one weakness.

  1. How fun! I am late to the DA party - but am now on the waiting list at my local library to view seasons 1 & 2. Now I have another title to add :)

  2. Thanks for the recommendation. January is a long wait, so maybe this will suffice.

    1. I know, Marsha. Oh, dear. Let me tell you, my Netflix list has seriously about twenty BBC dramas on it to help ease the pain. I hope I don't run out of things to watch before January. If I do, I might just have to {gasp!} do chores or some other such nonsense.
